Camera Obscura
A camera obscura makes the image of the scene inside a box, however, it does not record it. In a camera obscura light from a scene passes through a tiny hole or lens in one side of a box and an image of the scene is formed inside the box on the opposite side. Some camera obscuras were made up of whole rooms that the artist could stand inside. All camera obscuras collected light through a small hole until the 1500s when spectacle lenses were used to make the images much brighter and clearer. ‘Camera Obscura’ comes from the Latin words and means darkened room.
How to make a pinhole camera |
How to turn your room into a camera obscuraFirst get stick black paper onto your window in the room so that no light can enter the room. Now cover any other thing which is letting light through e.g. a door. Make sure the room is really dark and no lights are switched on. Now pierce a small hole into the black paper covering the window. Then get a white piece of paper and hold it in front of the hole. You should now be able to see what is outside but flipped over!
